Timor-Leste Travel and Tours, Made Easy

Primary CTA above the fold: Browse tours → (link to /tour-activity/ or the main tour listing)

The local operators behind many Timor-Leste tours, dive shops, trekking guides and boat operators, mostly don’t have a website, let alone a way to take an online payment. We do, an Australian team working alongside an on-ground Timorese team who vet every operator in person, so you can book and pay securely in AUD before you fly.

Timor-Leste (East Timor) is the newest country in Asia and one of the closest to Australia, Dili is about 1h20m from Darwin, roughly the same as flying Perth to Adelaide. Reef-fish biodiversity records, a 2,963m sunrise summit, and living weaving traditions are all a short flight away, and almost nobody else can book any of it for you online.

Choose your Timor-Leste tours

Two sentences each, framed by traveller type rather than ranked best-to-worst:

  • Atauro Island, a 2016 Conservation International survey recorded the highest reef-fish biodiversity ever measured here, one boat ride from Dili. Built for divers and snorkellers.
  • Dili, walkable, waterfront, and where the country’s independence story is told properly. A day or two, whichever direction you’re headed next.
  • Mount Ramelau, Timor-Leste’s highest point at 2,963m, climbed pre-dawn for a summit sunrise. Built for trekkers.
  • Baucau, Portuguese-era architecture and a slower coast, for travellers who want fewer stops done properly.
  • Jaco Island, uninhabited and sacred, reached only by a local fisherman’s boat.

What do you want to do?

  • Diving, Atauro’s reefs hold the reef-fish biodiversity record; the Dili coast offers shore-entry muck diving most divers never hear about. (Page is being built as part of this project, not live yet.)
  • Trekking: Mount Ramelau’s sunrise summit via the 5-day Maubisse, Mt Ramelau & Jaco Island tour, plus the coffee-growing highlands around Maubisse and Aileu.
  • Whale watching: blue whales migrate through the Ombai-Wetar Strait between Timor-Leste and Atauro roughly September to December.
  • Things to do, the full country-wide list, from culture and history to islands and coast.

One concrete fact beats an adjective every time, that’s the rule for every tile on this page.

Getting there from Australia

RouteAirline(s)Flight time
Darwin → Dili (direct)Airnorth, Aero Dili (verify current operators before publish, routes change)~1h20m
Other AU capitalsVia Darwin, or via Bali (Denpasar)Varies

Darwin–Dili direct is the easy way in; everyone else connects via Darwin or Bali. Full route-by-route detail, fares and airport tips are on the flights guide.

Australians get a visa on arrival at Dili airport, see the travel advice page for the current fee and process rather than duplicating it here.

Plan your trip: money, safety, when to go

  • Money: Timor-Leste’s official currency is the US dollar. Cash matters outside Dili; ATMs are scarce beyond the capital. Full breakdown: currency guide.
  • Safety: generally regarded as one of the safer countries in Southeast Asia, with the usual city-at-night sense applying in Dili. Full detail: travel advice & FAQs.
  • When to go: May to November is the dry season; whales pass through September to December.

Why book with us

We’re an Australian team paired with an on-ground Timorese team, and every operator listed on this site has been vetted by someone who’s actually met them. You pay securely in AUD before you fly, no cash-on-arrival risk, no guessing whether the boat or the guide will actually show up, under the direction of our CEO, Sana Hosseini. Meet the rest of the team on our about page.

Travelling with purpose

Ethical volunteering in Timor-Leste is possible, and we can point you toward organisations doing it properly rather than pretending we sell placements ourselves. See the volunteering guide.

FAQ

Is Timor-Leste good for tourists?

Yes, it offers record-setting diving, a genuine trekking summit, and a culture most Australians have never had the chance to see up close, with tours you can book and pay for entirely online before you fly.

How many days do you need?

A week gives you Dili plus one other region (Atauro or Ramelau); two weeks lets you cover the coast, the mountains and the islands without rushing.

Is Timor-Leste expensive?

Because the economy runs on US dollars, day-to-day costs sit closer to a developed economy than its Southeast Asian neighbours, budget roughly US$50–100/day as an independent traveller. Full breakdown on the currency guide.

When is the best time to go?

May to November is the dry season and the most reliable window for trekking and diving visibility; whales move through September to December.
